Maha Shivratri recipes. What sweets and desserts could you prepared? Which type of recipes is being prepared during this auspicious day? It has been believed that during this day Shiva and Parvati got married. This auspicious day is celebrated on the 13th or 14th day s day of the Krishna Paksha of the Indian month of Phalguna (Falgun).

Recipes could include sweet recipes, desserts, or main course or snack recipes. To kind of collect some ideas on what to cook on this very auspicious Bhole Nath day, I brought some of the ideas on what to cook during this fasting day.

Maha Shivratri 2022 is on 1st March i.e Tuesday. It is a Hindu festival that falls just before the occurrence of the “New moon”. During this day Lord shivas idols are being worshipped and offered puja thali with sweets and desserts by their devotees and believers. Prayers are being performed following the traditional rituals for well-being.

What Sweets could be prepared?

Traditionally Malpua, black til ladoos, and Vrat special wheat are being used to prepare sweets. Rice/regular cereals, green vegetables, and lentils are not consumed during this day. 1. Sabudana dessert

Sabudana Sweet

Sabudana sweet or dessert recipe is an extremely easy and delicious recipe. The 3 main ingredients used to prepare this recipe are Sabunaba i.e Sago, sugar, desiccated coconut, and cardamom powder. Orange food color is being added to the sweet to make it look to bring a bright bold color which gives it a perfect sweet and could be enjoyed during any festivals or shared with friends and family. Points to remember~

Let Sabudana soak in water overnight or for more hours for the best result. Also, If soaking them for more than 24 hours then place these in the refrigerator completely dipped in the water.

Once nicely soaked in the water you will see the granules looks fluffy and easily break once pressed by the fingertips.

2. Coconut Ladoos with Jaggery

Coconut Ladoo recipe with jaggery is not only very delicious but also considered healthy as well. It requires no prior practice to prepare. Could be easily and quickly prepared at home anytime. It hardly took me around 15 to 20 minutes to prepare these Coconut jaggery ladoos.

3. Sooji Halwa

Pineapple and Sooji Halwa. Pineapples and semolina sweet or a dessert recipe are prepared using freshly chopped pineapples cooked in water and sugar mixture until soft. And then mixed with sautéed semolina along with some clarified butter.

These turn out very aromatic and taste delicious. Served and garnished with ground toasted pistachios and almonds.

4. Coconut Ladoos with Milk

These ladoos are made with grated coconut and milk. Easy and quick to prepare. The ingredients used are milk, freshly grated coconut, sugar, ground cardamom, and Ghee(Clarified butter).

5. Mango Kalakand

Mango Kalakand easy recipe. Soft chewy and delicious. This is prepared by using milk, sugar, ripe mango pulp, cardamom, and grated paneer.

This is not only delicious but healthy too. The flavor of sweet mango pulp when mixed with grated paneer and cooked with milk and sugar it tastes heavenly.

6. Beetroot Halwa

Beetroot Halwa is creamy and delicious. Quick and easy to prepare. The main ingredients are grated beetroot, milk, khoya, ghee, sugar, and cardamom powder. Any dry nuts you may add to it to make it richer in nutrition and taste. Its bright red in color and taste simply amazing

7. sooji (semolina) malpua

MALPUA. Shallow fried. Very Easy and tasty authentic sweet recipe which is being prepared by women for ages.

This sweet is extremely easy to prepare at home and tastes delicious. Usually, these are being deep-fried but since I tried out the shallow frying method and it turned out well, I thought to share.

These are prepared using only All-purpose flour, sugar, and fennel seeds as the main key ingredients but in this recipe, I have added semolina (sooji) and desiccated coconut to prepare the pua i.e the sweet puree. 8. Sooji Halwa

Directions to prepare

Dry-roast 1 cup of semolina into a pan for 3 to 4 minutes keeping the flame at the lowest. Keep aside and into another pan sauté some 2 tablespoons of cashews, and 2 tablespoons of almonds in 2 tablespoons of ghee/clarified butter. When these turn slightly golden in color, take them out. Put the semolina back to the heat and add the leftover clarified butter that is being used for frying the dry nuts into it.

Then add in some extra around 2 tablespoons of more Ghee/Clarified butter into it and continuously stir and cook for 2 minutes. Add 2 cups of milk gradually followed by 1 cup of water. Give it a mix and Immediately add 1/2 of the sugar from 1 cup and mix. Once mixed well add 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom powder and 1/4 teaspoon of Kesar (saffron) into it and mix and cook few minutes. 9. Fruit cream

Fruit cream is a dessert that includes more or less freshly chopped fruits mixed with light sweet cream. Healthy and a quick dessert recipe. Very easy to prepare at home. You just need a few of the favorite fruits that you want to enjoy or you may simply use that is available to you. Simply peel the skin of the fruits of any form eg like if you are using apples, you may peel the skin as I prefer to do because I want it to be very soft and juicy apple bites coated with light sweet cream

10. Mango sweet

Ripe Mango sweet with Almonds is made using a few Ripe mangoes 

, Almond flour, powdered sugar, cornstarch, milk, cardamom powder, and some clarified butter. Garnished with some ground pistachios and whole almonds. Very easy to prepare. A soft and tasty treat for any special occasion or as an at-home, after-meal dessert. Look gorgeous and full of real mango flavor. Ingredients required

  • 1 and half cups of mango pulp paste
  • 1/4 cup + 4 teaspoons powdered sugar
  • 4 teaspoons of Cornstarch mixed in 1/4 cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon Cardamom powder
  • 1/2 cup Almond flour
  • 2 tablespoons of milk
  • 1 teaspoon of clarified butter

11. Malai Chom Chom

Easy and quick Malai Chom Chom. Rasgulla sponge malai chom chom. Milk powder kesar malai sweet. Amazing dessert. This is a spongy rasgullas malai chom chom or chum chum recipe or says Malai chop. Super creamy in texture. Simply melts in the mouth. This is prepared using soft chenna as the main ingredient and followed by kneading and then cooking these in boiling water for about 10 minutes.

Cook time

Cooking time depends on the size of the chenna balls as well. The key point is to understand that once these increase in size. I mean when these double in size these are done. You should turn off the flame immediately and let them cool. After boiling transfer these into the hot sugar syrup for an hour minimum. Finally pour up amazing milk Kesar milk malai on the top with some of your favorite dry nuts.

To give it a stunning look add some colorful tutti-fruity in the center of it. Looks beautiful when served. You may decorate these with some fresh half-cut cherries as well.

To prepare Chenna balls for the rasgullas we need

  • Whole milk 8 cups
  • White vinegar 5 tablespoons mixed with 5 tablespoons of water
  • For cooking the chenna balls we need sufficient plain water to boil these for 10 minutes

Why People Celebrate Mahashivratri?

It is a Hindu festival when Lord Shiva devotees go on fasting and worshipping shiva by chanting his name as “Om Namah Shivaya”

Food Ingredients prefered to be used during Shivaratri

  • Sabudana,

Khichri made with buckwheat or sabudana could be prepared or desserts using these two ingredients could be prepared as well which should be fulfilling.

How is Mahashivratri’s fast is broken?

On Maha Shivratri day the devotees visit the shiva temple along with their puja thali which includes milk, Ganga Jal, and ghee to give bathe to the shiv ling, along with some flowers, bel Patta (Bilva Patra, and datura fruit. After they give bathe to shiva’s pind with ghee, milk, and Ganga Jal they offer ghee Niranjan in the temple, and then the next day the fast is broken.
