This Oats recipe is very easy to prepare on top of a gas stove. It hardly takes 25-30 minutes to cook these old-fashioned oats to enjoy as a meal. Though there are different oats recipes that you can prepare. But in this recipe, I wanted to share how I prepared these in an Indian “kheer” style method for myself and my family and they all simply loved it. No doubt it turned out perfect in taste and texture, more importantly, I got a new way to enjoy this as a healthy dessert or a light sweet snack anytime which is more of guilt-free eating I must say. You may also find a dairy-free oatmeal recipe loaded with fresh fruits and almonds in this blog which you can try as well.

Preparing oats this way could be great for kids, adults toddlers, and even babies. The consistency of this recipe could be easily adjusted by adding more milk or water. Also, cook until the required softness is achieved and you are comfortable feeding these to kids or babies.

The term oatmeal refers to the preparation of oats. Oats could be de-husked, steamed, and flattened, or could be in form of course flour, milled-or steel-cut. You may choose the one you prefer to use.

Ingredients required to prepare Oats recipe

Only 3 main ingredients are required to prepare this way oats recipe. Milk, sugar, cardamoms.

  1. Oats (old fashioned oats, organic)
  2. Water
  3. Milk
  4. Sugar or jaggery
  5. Cardamoms (ground)

15 to 20 minutes

Into a saucepan warm up some water, add oats into it and mix. As soon as it starts to bubble, pour milk and continue to cook until is soft and smushy. At this point add sugar or jaggery and mix. Stir and cook further until approaches a kheer consistency. Towards the end of the recipe sprinkle some ground cardamom and give it a mix.

Garnish with dry fruits and nuts and enjoy.

Step-by-step dierctions to prepare Oats recipe

1. Heat some water into a saucepan and add 1/2 cup of oats,

2. Once the water and oats start to bubble up add milk 2 cups and continue to cook until the oats turned out soft and smushy.

3. Towards the end add some sugar or jaggery according to your taste and flavor.

4. Add 1/2 teaspoon of freshly ground cardamom seeds. Stir these well and cook until the mixture turns out creamy and thick or when you see it look similar to the kheer consistency.

5. Serve with Kesar, Pista, Badam, raisins as a dessert garnishing.

Variations could be done to this oats recipe

If you want it to be more thick and creamy then skip cooking in water instead cook completely in milk to make it richer and creamy in taste.

Add nuts, or any dry fruits of choice once cooked and then garnish. Or you may add in between cooking as well.

To make it extra aromatic you may also add a pinch of Kesar strings i.e saffron strings, which also adds up the color to the dish.

If you are preparing this for babies then make sure to add cardamom powder instead of crushed cardamoms.
