Ingredients used for star cookies:

  • Plain flour 2 cups
  • Unsalted butter 2 oz Should be at room temperature.
  • Icing sugar 1/2 cup
  • Vanilla essence 1 tbs
  • 1 whole egg

For icing:

  • Icing sugar 1 cup
  • 3 tsp of water
  • Food color yellow 2 drops
  • Vanilla essence 1 tsp

Please Note: The measurement of the icing given here is less as compared to the given cookies. The icing is for half of the dough used to make these star cookies, so make sure to increase the volume of icing if you want to decorate all of your cookies or using all the dough.

Directions to use:

For making the dough. Into a bowl add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt and mix nicely. Mixing all the dry ingredients first because that helps them to combine well. Add the butter and vanilla essence and crack one whole egg into it and mix and make a dough. Knead it nice till it forms a smooth and soft dough which is easy to roll out.

Rolling and shaping:

Roll out the dough and cut it out with a star-shaped cookie cutter. Thickness depends on your choice but I must say thinner is better as always for crispiness.

Place the star cookies on to the baking tray by placing a baking sheet on it.

REFRIGERATE:

Once done shaping keep them in a refrigerator for few hours and then bake for best results. Note: Place these cookies on a parchment paper so as to avoid sticking.

Take them out of the refrigerator and Preheat the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake the cookies for 7-10 minutes or when you see the cookies changed slightly golden at the bottom. They are ready to be taken out.

Take them out and place them on a cooling rack and let them cool completely.

Icing and decorating the star cookies :

Here I’m choosing the simplest way of icing using sugar water and some food color.

foo dcolor mix
Simple sugar icing yellow in color

Into a bowl take 1 cup of icing sugar and 1 tsp of pure vanilla essence. Add 2 to 3 tsp of water and mix until the sugar dissolves completely. Then add 2 drops of yellow food color or choose to add little more or less color as required to achieve the desired color and consistency.

Mix all together nice and put them into a piping bag. I’m using a thin piping tip as these cookies are really small in size but Just one bite will fill your mouth with sweetness for sure.

Once done with the icing leave them like that for some time and allow them to dry. When dried completely use a golden shimmering food color spray on top of the star cookies shown in the picture above. This will completely change the look of the cookies. They will shine like stars. The shimmery shine looks beautiful and looks different than any other normal cookies.

Total time

Prep: 20 min.

Chilling: 30 min/overnight for best results

Bake time: 10 min./batch + cooling

Makes about 30 small star cookies

Importance of refrigeration:

Usually, the cookie dough is always good to chill before making the cookies but here I am chilling the shaped cookies before baking because shaping up the cookies becomes harder after chilling. So if you need to shape up your cookies then chill them after shaping them up.

Refrigeration is recommended because the cookies spread less as compared to the nonchilled ones and puff up too. Chilling cookies solidifies the sugar/fat in the cookies so as a result, they take a longer time to melt.

CHILLING OVERNIGHT:

Many ask the question is it ok to chill the cookie dough overnight? I must say it is absolutely ok to do that. Actually it will result in a more quality textured cookie. Overnight chilled cookies are crispier in texturewise than room temperature cookies.
