Cabbage Manchurian

Cabbage Manchurian is a completely vegetarian recipe. An Indo-Chinese recipe with a video attached in the section below. Step by Step method to follow along with pictures included in the section below. In this recipe, finely grated or chopped cabbage 🥬 is mixed with flour and deep-fried until golden brown color. These are crispy crunchy fried cabbage balls coated in tasty Manchurian sauce typically made with combining garlic, onions, bell pepper, and lots of spring onions which are slightly sautéed in oil and mixed with ketchup, red chili or stir fry sauce and soy sauce. The lovely aromatic indo-Chinese flavor is simply mouthwatering.

Ingredients required to prepare the cabbage balls are as follows:

For Cabbage Manchurian we need

  • 3 cups of finely chopped cabbage
  • 1/4 cup of cornflour
  • 1/4 cup of plain flour
  • Salt 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper 1 teaspoon
  • Green chili powder or red chili powder 1 teaspoon
  • Paprika 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala powder 1 teaspoon
  • Water 1/2 cup
  • Ginger paste 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garlic paste 1/2 teaspoon

Ingredients required to prepare the sauce for cabbage Manchurian are as follows:

For Manchurian sauce we need

  • Onions chopped 1/3 cup
  • Garlic chopped or shredded 1 and 1/2 tablespoons
  • Bell pepper chopped 1/2 cup
  • Spring onions chopped 2 tablespoons
  • Sprinkle some salt and black pepper powder as per taste
  • Red chili powder 1/2 teaspoon
  • Tomato ketchup 2 tablespoons
  • Stir fry sauce 1 tablespoon
  • Light Soy sauce 2 tablespoons
  • Water 1/2 cup
  • Corn flour slurry ( cornflour 1 and 1/2 tablespoons + water 1/3 cup )
  • Spring onions 2 tablespoons + some sprinkles on top when served.

Directions to prepare Cabbage balls are as follows:

Take 3 cups finely chopped cabbage.

Into it add 1/4 cup of cornflour, 1/4 cup of All-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper powder, 1 teaspoon of Garam masala powder, 1 teaspoon of paprika, 1 teaspoon of red chili or green chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon of ginger paste, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic paste.

Add 1/2 cup of water into it. Mix and combine well-using hands. Use water more or less accordingly.

Shape them as small balls.

Deep fry these balls in low to medium flame until golden brown in color. Fry all and take them out.

Keep them aside until we prepare the Manchurian sauce

Directions to prepare the Manchurian sauce:

Into a karahi or a saucepan add 2 tablespoons of oil and heat. Add small chopped garlic 1 and 1/2 tablespoons, onions chopped 1/3 cup, bell pepper cut into small pieces 1/2 cup. 2 tablespoons of Spring onions and sauté few seconds. Sprinkle some salt and pepper as per taste. Red chili powder 1/2 teaspoon and sauté.

Add tomato ketchup 2 tablespoons, Stir-fry sauce or red chili sauce, and mix.

Then add 2 tablespoons of light soy sauce and 1/2 a cup of water. Into it add cornflour slurry.

Prepare cornflour slurry by adding 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of cornflour into 1/3 cup of water and mix. Then add this slurry into the sauce mixture. Add 2 tablespoons of spring onions. Give the mixture a good mix and stir and cook a few minutes in low flame.

Finally, add fried cabbage balls into the sauce and mix and cook 2 minutes. Delicious mouthwatering cabbage Manchurian is now all set to serve hot. At last garnish with some sprinkles of spring onions on top and enjoy.

Tip to serve:

Serve this delicious dish with fried rice. It tastes really great. It’s worth trying I must say.
