FUNNEL CAKE RECIPE. Quick and easy funnel cake served with delicious Cherry Sauce and lightly whipped cream on the top.
These are deep-fried cakes prepared by using a funnel-shaped opening piping bag. I am using a ziplock bag by cutting it in one corner. This is prepared by simply heating up the oil and squeezing the batter in a zig-zag swirly motion. Frying both sides equally is important. Fry both sides until golden brown in color. Server these amazingly fluffy and soft cakes on a paper plate sprinkled with vanilla sugar and ground cinnamon powder and served with cherry 🍒 sauce and lightly whipped cream on the top.
These are being sold at the State Fair served with powdered sugar sprinkles on the top and were amazing. You will not know it until you have tried these. Simply Delicious. Also very quick and easy to prepare.
Ingredients required to prepare Funnel Cake
- All-purpose flour 2 cups
- Salt 1/4 teaspoon
- Baking powder 1 teaspoon
- Icing sugar 2 tablespoons
- Eggs two large-size
- Milk 1 cup
Importance of the ingredients used.
- All-purpose flour: forms the texture of the cake
- Salt: which balances the taste
- Baking powder: helps the cake to cook well and the cake puffs up
- Icing sugar: mixes easily into the cake batter. Also, it contains between 2% and 5% of an anti-caking agent – such as corn starch or potato starch which helps absorb moisture, prevent clumping, and improve flow. Well for this recipe you may also use powdered sugar prepared at home. Just grind the sugar finely into a grinding jar and use it for this recipe. That should work too.

Directions to prepare Funnel Cake at Home
Sieve 2 cups of All-purpose flour, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 2 tablespoons of icing sugar. Mix these dry ingredients. Break 2 large eggs into it and add 1 cup of milk. Mix all together to prepare a smooth-flowing funnel cake batter.
I am using a ziplock bag to fill in the batter and then frying these into the hot oil. You may use a funnel to prepare these as done in the old times.
Fill the batter into the ziplock bag. Cut one corner of it around 1 cm wide opening. Then squeeze the batter into the hot oil. The oil should not be too hot otherwise these might get burnt as soon as you drop them into the very hot oil and will not cook well inside. So the oil should be hot but not extremely hot. Keep the flame low when you drop the batter into the hot oil. Later adjust the heat accordingly.
Squeeze out the batter in a zig-zag swirling motion and fry both sides equally until turns golden brown in color.
Take them out once fried preferably on a paper plate or a kitchen towel to help soak the extra oil. Sprinkle Vanilla sugar and cinnamon powder on the top. You may use simple powdered sugar instead. These are now ready to be served with delicious Cherry 🍒 sauce and lightly whipped cream. Believe me, you will not know the taste until you have tasted these. These are so amazingly good 😌 A very interesting way to have some fun time preparing this easy dessert during holidays. Especially Christmas times.
Step-by-step directions to prepare along with images shown below
Preparing the Funnel cake batter
- Sieve All-purpose flour 2 cups,
2. Salt 1/4 teaspoon
3. Baking powder 1 teaspoon
4. Icing sugar 2 tablespoons
5. Sieve all the dry ingredients
6. Mix all the dry ingredients
7. Add 2 large eggs
8. Add milk 1 cup and mix
9. Mix to prepare a lump-free cake batter
10. The batter should be medium thick not too thin nor too thick
11. Use a ziplock bag
12. Fill the cake batter into the ziplock bag
13. Seal the ziplock bag
14. Cut one corner of the ziplock bag around 1 cm wide
15. Put it in a refrigerator if not using it immediately
Frying
16. Pour the batter in by squeezing the batter into the heated oil. Note: The oil should not be too hot.
17. Squeeze and put in a zig-zag swirly motion.
18. Fry in low to medium flame until golden brown in color. These puff up as being cooked for a few minutes on both sides.
19. Turn and flip. Fry both sides equally
20. Transfer these, preferably on a paper plate or a kitchen towel to soak any excessive oil.
Topping and decorating
21. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of vanilla sugar and 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon mixture on top. Sprinkle evenly all over the funnel cake. You may use plain powdered sugar instead. It should be fine and taste good too.
22. In the center pour some cherry 🍒 sauce along with some lightly whipped cream. The Cherry Sauce recipe is given below.
23. Sprinkle some some more vanilla sugar and cinnamon on top of the cherry sauce (Optional) Well this is just a decorative tip.
24. Lightly whipped cream on top
25. Decorate with one whole cherry 🍒

How to prepare Cherry Sauce?
Into a saucepan add Water 1 cup, Sugar 1/4 cup, and Chopped cherries 1 cup. Boil and cook few minutes. Add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch slurry and mix. Cook some more time or until it turns out sticky consistency. Lastly, add 1 drop of red food color to get a beautiful rich dark red color. But this is optional. You may use it without food color as well.
