Fish dipped in a potato curry/gravy and must be served warm or hot.

Taste and textue:

This fish gravy taste simple but yummy.

The texture is semi liquid but goes good with rice, Indian bread, roti, naan etc or it could be eaten plain.

Fish used:

Fish that has been used here is bass. You may use any other fish of your choice.

Pre preparations:

  1. The fish must be sliced into small pieces for easy frying.
  2. Clean and wash them nicely with hot and cold water.
  3. Let it dry by itself or use a paper towel to help it dry.
  4. Marinate them for at least 10-15 minutes before frying.

Marination:

Marinate the fish pieces with

  • 1 tbs of turmeric powder
  • 1 tbs of salt

Keep it marinated for 10-15 minutes before frying.

Frying steps to follow:

  • Take a thick bottomed pan if the material of the pan is made up of steel for easy frying or Indian karahi or non stick frying pan.
  • Heat 1/4th cup of Mustard oil.
  • When the oil is heated enough lower the flame of the gas top for caution. Then drop slowly a single piece of fish into the pan.
  • Note: It’s like any other frying you do in your everyday life. Into the oil if you drop something which has water in it. It catches fire. So first the oil should be heated enough so that the fish does not stick into the pan. But just before dropping the fish into it lower the gas flame for few seconds for safely so that oil gets normal and not too hot to prevent it from catching fire.
  • Slowly drop all the fish pieces and fry both the sides at least for a minute on low to medium flame. This helps the fish to get crispy which tastes really good.
  • Once done with frying the fish place them on a plate for later use.

Steps for making this fish curry/gravy:

  1. Take a big size potato. Peel and slice them into long shapes.
  2. Into a thick bottom pan or regular pan put 1 tbs of regular oil i.e refined oil. And let the oil heat.
  3. Once oil is heated add black cumin seeds to it.
  4. When the cumin seeds starts spluttering add the potatoes.
  5. Once the potatoes starts to turn golden brown add 1 tbs of cumin powder , 1 tbs of coriander powder . 1tbs turmeric powder and 1tsp of salt or salt as per taste.
  6. Note: At this point when we are adding spices to the potatoes we have to keep stirring them so that they do not burn. Within few seconds after adding the spices add 1/2 cup of water and stir. Then gradually add 5-6 cups of water to it and let it boil.
  7. Once the water is boiled add the fried fish pieces into it along with the oil that we used for frying them. This step will surely enhance the flavor and texture of the fish gravy.
  8. Now add around 1 tbs of grated ginger, few green chillies and coriander leaves. And cover and let it cook for 12 -15 mins until you see that half of the water is evaporated and the consistency of the liquid has changed.
  9. You may check in between. Also break some potatoes with the help of spoon or spatula.
  10. Note: when you see the potatoes are too soft to break it means the gravy will change the texture soon. And after a few minutes or so it will be done.

Serving tips:

Serve this hot with steamed rice or bread, naan or Indian paratha. It tastes simple but awesome.
