In this blog post, I will write about chocolate flavored modak recipe. Modak is considered as a unique Indian sweet famous in Maharashtra and many other parts of India.
However, here I am trying to give it a different taste and flavor with a little touch of modifications. This is usually served to Lord Ganesha during the festive season in many places in India. Women used to make it differently and it has been religiously believed to be Lord Ganesha’s favorite dessert.
Usually the filling is made with coconuts, dry fruits along with mawa. I believe when you make something from heart it reaches to God no matter what. I use to worship Lord Ganesha since many years and tried Modak in different ways. Now this year I thought to serve my little Ganesha with this chocolate flavored Modak and I am sure little ones will enjoy more. Hence, below is the recipe.
Chocolate Modak Ingredients:
- Milk 1/2 gallon i.e 1.89 L
- Sugar 1 cup
- Cocoa powder 1/2 cup
- Almonds 10 -15 crushed
- Dry coconut finely shredded
- All purpose flour 1 1/2 cup
- Coconut oil 2 tbs
Steps to follow to make Chocolate Modak:
For making mawa or khoya boil the milk first in high to medium flame and then let it boil in lower flame by continuously stirring it. Do not let it stick to the bottom of the pan.
Tip – Use a thick bottomed pan/karahi for making this preparation.
After that, continues stirring is important for best results. As the milk thickens it is more likely to stick on the bottom and get burned.
This is a time consuming process. So better try this if you have sufficient time to make this preparation. Khoya or mawa can also be made by using milk powder. It is a instant preparation method that you can see in my next post.
Preparation time for mawa/khoya:
It took me around 2 hours for making this mawa/khoya. The amount of milk i used here is 1/2 gallon i.e 1.89 L.
How to make mawa or khoya :
- In a thick bottomed pan simply strain and pour the milk and allow it to boil.
- As soon as it reaches the boiling point. Stir it with the spoon or spatula and reduce the flame.
- Keep the flame medium or low heat and let it boil by constant stirring.
- Once the milk is reduced in volume and gets thicker you may use a wooden spatula to scratch it from the bottom and sides and collet the mawa nicely.
- Into it then add one cup of sugar
- Add 1/2 cup of cocoa powder and stir
- Within a minute you can see it gets its thickest form. This is the point where you need to turn off the flame and collect the mawa in a bowl and allow it to cool.
- Once cooled refrigerate it for an hour or so.
Making the dough:
- Into a bowl take 1 1/2 cup of all purpose flour.
- Add 2 tbs of coconut oil
- Add 1/2 tsp of salt
- Gradually add 1 cup of milk and knead well until it turns into a smooth and soft dough.
- Once the dough is ready cover and keep it aside for 10 minutes.
- Finally, after 10 minutes roll the dough thin and with the help of a cookie cutter cut it into round shapes and place them on a flat plate or any flat surface.
Shaping:
Most importantly, to give a beautiful shape to your modak you need to follow few steps and the dough must be soft and smooth in texture.
Firstly, Place one round shaped dough in your left hand and with the help of your right hand put one mawa ball into the center of it.
Secondly, press the center of the mawa ball with the help of your finger tips put some crushed pieces of almonds.
Further, cover the mawa balls with the flat shaped dough from all sides. Apply water on the sides of the dough for proper sticking.
Watch the video for proper understanding.
Give it a shape. Your modak will be amazing in shape and taste.
Final step:
Deep frying: This is the final step once you are done with shaping up your modak. You must deep fry them.
Put sufficient regular oil into the pan for you modak to be deep fried. Once the oil is heated, lower the flame and drop one by one into the hot oil slowly.
Fry them until golden brown.
Take them out. Drain excessive oil and place them on a plate.
Once cooled enjoy your modak.
Serve to God.
